The Knowledge of The Signs Of The Day Of Judgement

                                   [ʿilmuʾĀlāmāt As-Sāʾah]

Ḥadīth Jibrīl [Gabrial] عليه السلام ʿalayhi salām: Peace be upon him]:

Narrated by Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him): “One day while we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), there came before us a man dressed in extremely white clothes and with very black hair. There were no signs of travel on him, and none of us knew him. He sat down facing the Prophet (peace be upon him) with his knees touching his knees and placed his hands on his thighs. He said, ‘O Muhammad, tell me about Islam.’ The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, ‘Islam is to testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish prayer, to pay zakat, to fast in Ramadan, and to make the pilgrimage to the House if you are able to do so.’ He said, ‘You have spoken the truth.’ We were amazed at him asking him and then saying that he had spoken the truth. He said, ‘Then tell me about Iman (faith).’ He said, ‘It is to believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, and the Last Day, and to believe in divine destiny, both the good and the evil thereof.’ He said, ‘You have spoken the truth.’ He said, ‘Then tell me about Ihsan (excellence).’ He said, ‘It is to worship Allah as though you are seeing Him, and while you see Him not yet truly He sees you.’ He said, ‘Then tell me about the Hour.’ He said, ‘The one questioned about it knows no better than the questioner.’ He said, ‘Then tell me about its signs.’ He said, ‘That the slave-girl will give birth to her mistress and that you will see barefoot, naked, destitute shepherds competing in constructing lofty buildings.’ Then he left, and I stayed for a time. Then he said, ‘O Umar, do you know who the questioner was?’ I said, ‘Allah and His Messenger know best.’ He said, ‘It was Jibril (Gabriel), who came to teach you your religion.'” – Source: Sahih Muslim, Book 1, Hadith 1

It is well established that there are four fundamental components of the Islamic Religion [dīn] – Islam, Iman, Ihsan and Signs of the Hour, as evidenced by the Hadith [narration] of Jibril [Gabriel] عليه السلام – (Peace be upon him) in which the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) informed Umar and his companions رضی الله عنھم [radiallāhu ʿanhum: May Allah be pleased with them], “That was Jibril who came to teach you your religion.”

This article will focus on explaining the fourth pillar of Religion, which pertains to the Signs of The Hour – ʿilmuʾĀlāmāt As-Sāʾah through the work of the late scholar and esteemed knower of Allah ﷻ [jalla jalāluhu: Great is His Majesty] Ḥabīb Abu Bakr Al Adani b.ʿAli Al-Mashhur, translated and summarised by Shaykh Ahmed Saad Al-Azhari.

What does it mean when it is said ‘The Hour’?

The Hour is the moment the world ends, and resurrection begins – The Day of Judgment. The “Signs of the Hour” are the events that signal its approach. These are events or phenomena—some minor, some middle and some major—that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ foretold would happen before the Day of Judgement – The Hour.

The article will be divided into two sections, the first section will discuss about the Science of the Signs of the Hour – Fiqh of Transitions, and the second section will discuss the Signs of the Hour (Minor, Middle and Major signs).

Ḥabīb Abu Bakr Al Adani b.ʿAli Al-Mashhur conducted a comprehensive and in-depth study of the above Hadith of Jibrīl, famously recognised by scholars as ‘The Fountain of Sunnah’, and serves as the foundation of the faith. Habib Abu Bakr Al Adani b.ʿAli Al-Mashhur explains that in order to understand the foundation of the religion, one must study the following:

1.      The Well-Established Practices [That does not change – Thawabit]: This includes knowledge of the sciences of Jurisprudence (Islam), Doctrine (Iman), and Spirituality (Ihsan).

2.      The Changes/Transitions [Tahawwulat]: This pertains to the science of the various Signs of the Hour, focusing on social and cosmic transitions, known as Fiqh at-Tahawwulat – the Fiqh of Transitions or the Fiqh of Changes.  It covers the knowledge of the Signs of the Hour.

Section 1 – The Science of The Fiqh of Transitions (Fiqh at-Tahawwulat):

Fiqh of Transitions – As Summarised by Shaykh Ahmad Saad al-Azhari

‘Fiqh of Transitions’ also known as ‘Fiqh at-Tahawulat’ refers to a group of Quranic and prophetic text that discusses the portents and the Signs of the Day of Judgement. Fiqh of transitions is the Islamic understanding of the changes that have happened and still happen in the cosmos and in the life of humanity and the development in theoretical and applied sciences and culture as well as the incidents and tribulations that have occurred and will occur in the different stages of human history in general, and the history of the Muslim community in particular, until the Day of Judgement. Such understanding is derived from a prospective reading of incidents and events or from a retrospective reading of the history of nations and communities as depicted in the two essential sources: The Qur’an and the Sunnah.

The main functions of Fiqh of Transitions

One of the main function of the ‘Fiqh of Transitions’ is studying the Qur’anic and Prophetic texts that discuss changes and transitions in three areas:

  1. Understanding the nature of the prophetic era during which the prophet (peace be upon him) lived and in which the Qur’an was revealed in portions responding to events and incidents, and understanding the gradualism of legislation during that period and what various occasions of revelation actually necessitated. (Istidlaliyyah)
  2. Understanding perspective texts: These are the Qur’anic verses and Prophetic hadiths that foretell future events and prophecy various portents, signs, calamities, and misleading tribulations that continuously occur until the Day of Judgement. (Istibaqiyyah)
  3. Understanding the retrospective texts: These are the Qur’anic verses and hadiths of the Prophet (peace be upon him) that tackle the stories of previous nations and Divinely revealed punishments and tribulations that occurred before the advent of the Prophet (peace be upon him) all the way back to the time of Adam (peace be upon him). (Istiqra’iyyah)

The fourth pillar of Religion (Signs of the Hour) is changeable and is divided into two sections:

  1. Understanding the cosmic changes: These are the signs and conditions that occur by Allah’s order before the Hour.

  1. Presenting and explaining the events of the Signs of the Hour: This involves examining the events of the Signs of the Hour and the connection of it whether it is good or bad and the corruption of these events. It also includes conveying and explaining the events and their connections based on the signs given by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the proofs from Islamic Sharia. This helps differentiate between the conditions and statuses of the unbelievers, hypocrites, and their positions in these changes, and between the true believers (Mumins) and their position and salvation in Dunya and Akhira.

Due to the significance of the Hadith of Jibril عليه السلام, which encompasses the key aspects of Islam, Iman, Ihsan, and the of the Signs of the Hour, it has become necessary (Lazim) for Muslims to understand the knowledge of all four pillars of the religion. This understanding must reflect their importance and the interconnections between them. These pillars form the foundation that upholds the Amanah (trust) that Allah has entrusted to humankind.

“Indeed, We offered the Trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, but they declined to bear it and feared it; but man [undertook to] bear it. Indeed, he was unjust and ignorant.” – Qur’an: Surah Ahzab 33:72

The Fiqh of Transition highlights the dangers in excluding the fourth [changeable] pillar from the first three [stable – Thawabit] pillars: Islam, Iman, and Ihsan. These three pillars have faced hardships throughout due to this exclusion from the fourth pillar.

Historically, the first three pillars of Religion have been subjected to various challenges, such as deception and distortion as their true essence was manipulated for political agendas and misunderstood due to differing interpretations of Islam as Aqida [creed] and Religion among Muslims. This affected the importance of understanding what should exist between a believer and his brother, the belief in unquestionable cosmic truths (Iman), the values of Ihsan, such as Zuhd (asceticism), Adab (etiquette), and dhikr (remembrance of Allah). In our time, these aspects have been distorted, causing deliberate disputes among Muslims.

Understanding and studying the fourth pillar is crucial for protecting the other three pillars—Islam, Iman, and Ihsan from weakness and division. The comprehensive study of the fourth pillar [Signs of the Hour – Fiqh of Transition] helps us differentiate between the status of believers and disbelievers in this world. It emphasises that believers may face hardships in this transient world, while disbelievers might enjoy temporary luxury.

To fully grasp the significance of the fourth pillar of religion, it’s important to highlight key points that explain its importance and the benefits that arise from its study.

  1. To mindfully and sincerely study the Hadith of Jibril عليه السلام:

·       This helps us understand the positions of the thawabit (the unchangeable sciences: Islam, Iman and Ihsan) and their significance.

·       By doing so, we can recognise the changes brought about by the fourth pillar [ Signs of the Hour], which can lead to the potential destruction and removal of the first three pillars [Naqaid].

  1. Understanding Ahadith Concerning the Changeable Generation:

·       To study the understanding of the ahadith concerning the changing generations and their relationship with the meaning of the Hadith of Jibril عليه السلام, where the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “The slave will give birth to her mistress/master.”

  1. Examining the Overpowering Materialistic Culture:

·       To study the overpowering influence of materialistic culture that is infiltrating and spreading across society, particularly in the Arab and Islamic society and its position with the hadith of Jibril عليه السلام when the prophet [peace be upon him] said; “The barefoot, naked, destitute shepherds competing in constructing lofty buildings.”

·       Understanding the signs from this hadith and other ahadiths and how they relate to the dunya (this world), immersing in worldly affairs and what it will lead to – deviation and destruction.

4.      Studying the Fiqh of Change (Fiqh of Transitions):

·       To study the Fiqh of Transitions through its relevant Ayat (verses) that is compulsory for us to know and the ahadith from the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

·       This involves learning about the major, middle, and minor signs of the Hour.

As mentioned in the hadith of Jibril عليه السلام, the science of the Signs of the Hour has two main pillars referred to in two statements:

1.      “The slave will give birth to her mistress/master.”

2.      “The barefooted, barely covered, destitute shepherds continually compete with one another in constructing lofty buildings.”

  1. “The slave girl will give birth to her mistress/master.”

This statement by the prophet (peace be upon him) refers to a failure and change in the institution of knowledge and faith (Iman). We learn that there is a shift in the way knowledge is sought and acquired. Knowledge was transmitted from the parent (father and mother) to the child known as Abawi/Adami; with a chain of transmission through prophets and scholars, adhering to the Qur’an and Sunnah. However, now knowledge comes from external institutions, including non-Islamic Schools known as Anawi/Shaytani, which originated from Iblis and Qabil [the son of Adam]. This knowledge is ego driven and is disconnected from the religious teachings.

There has been various explanation to the above statement by scholars depending on the time and situation they were living in. What does it mean when the prophet (peace be upon him) said; “The slave girl will give birth to her mistress/master”?

According to Ibn Hajar رَحْمَةُ الله عليه [rahmatullāhi ʿalayhi: May the Mercy of Allah be upon him], as the Day of Judgment approaches, there will be an increase in the spread of disobedience and ingratitude of children [‘uquuq] towards their parents, leading to a reversal of roles, where the parents, who are supposed to raise the children, find themselves being dominated and mistreated by their offspring as though they were their slaves. Ibn Hajar رَحْمَةُ الله عليه also notes that this reversal of roles is further demonstrated by the idea that someone who is morally low (a “saafil”) will rise to a position of power and authority, while those who are noble and respectable [like parents] will fall from their positions – such that a son will treat his mother with the same disrespect that a master would show to his slave – with humiliation, abuse and servitude. This metaphorical use of the term ‘master’ in the hadith of the prophet (peace be upon him) highlights the severe degradation of values and social norms. These changes (becoming disrespectful to parents and people of low character rising to power) marks the period of the end of times.

Disobedience (‘uquuq) has spread, and the roles of the one being raised (al- Murabiyan) and the one raising (al-rabb) have reversed. Sons and daughters raised by their mothers and fathers now command and mistreat them in ways that undermine the honourable status Allah has bestowed upon parents. This is one of the Signs of the Hour, as mentioned in the hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him).

“And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], ‘uff,’ and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.” – Qur’an: Isra 17:23

Narrated by Abu Bakra (may Allah be pleased with him): “The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, ‘Shall I not inform you of the biggest of the major sins?’ They said, ‘Yes, O Messenger of Allah.’ He said, ‘To join others in worship with Allah and to be undutiful to one’s parents.’ The Prophet (peace be upon him) then sat up after he had been reclining and said, ‘And I warn you against giving a false statement and a false witness.’ The Prophet (peace be upon him) kept on repeating that warning until we thought he would not stop.” – Source: Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 5976

This Ayah and hadith illustrate that after warning against associating partners with Allah (Shirk), disobeying one’s parents is the gravest sin. This emphasises the immense honour and respect parents are given in Islam, to such an extent that if a mother calls to her child while the child is engaged in a mandatory prayer (salah), the child should continue praying. However, if the prayer is voluntary (nafilah) prayer, and the mother continues to call, the child must exit the prayer and attend to their mother’s/parent’s needs.

Therefore, we can see a complete imbalance in social norms due to this reversal of roles between parents and children. Furthermore, there have been notable changes in the methods of teaching, starting from the basics (like learning the alphabet) to higher education (universities). This shift often leads to the destruction of divine knowledge. For example, the call to Allah, etiquettes and manners, the separation between religion and history, the ways of wisdom and good advice/counsel. This modern approach to education, gradually undermines or dismisses traditional Islamic values, leads to a significant imbalance in the understanding of religion.

Instead of parents being the source of knowledge, guidance, and faith—as in the Abawi way—these now come from external sources, following the Anawi way. In this shift, children receive these influences from outside and begin to implement and even impose them on their parents.”

Narrated Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman: The prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Prophethood will remain in you for as long as God decides for it to remain and then God will remove it when He decides to remove it. After prophethood, there will be a rule on the style of prophethood and it will exist for as long as God decides for it to exist, then He will remove it when He decides to remove it. Then there will be a kingdom in which people will face trials and tribulations and it will continue to exist for as long as God decides for it to exist. Then He will remove it, when He decides to remove it. After this, there will be an oppressive kingdom and it will continue to exist for as long as God decides for it to exist. Then He will remove it, when He decides to remove it. Then there will once again be a rule on the style of prophethood. After saying this, the Prophet (sws) was silent.” – Source: This narrative is reported on the authority of Hudhayfah ibn al-Yamān – al-Nu‘mān ibn Bashīr – Habīb ibn Sālim – Dā’ūd ibn Ibrāhīm al-Wāsitī – Sulaymān ibn Dā’ūd al-Tiyālisī

2.     “The barefooted, barely covered, destitute shepherds continually compete with one another in constructing lofty buildings.”

This statement refers to changes and corruption occurring in the areas of governance and economy.

How does failure in governance and economy affect Islam?

Rulings have strayed from the boundaries of Islamic Sharia into various forms of secular politics under names such as government, democracy, parties, and organisations. This shift brings political ideologies from the western world into the eastern world, often conflicting with Islamic principles. Similarly, the economic and financial systems go against Sharia, such as banks, interest, money laundering, and certain new economic laws that are doubtful and interfere with the market. These laws and practices often promote a negative understanding in the market and depend on competition in constructing tall buildings, the spread of luxury, entertainment, and resorts – with characteristics that are unlawful or doubtful (mashbuh). These doubtful/suspicious dealings and values are promoted in the name of business and contradict Islamic principles in their interactions (mu’amalat) and values.

Under the research of these two pillars of the Signs of the Hour emerges what is known as the Fiqh of Transitions (Fiqh at-Tahawullat), in the following 5 parts.

Fiqh at-Tahawwulat – Fiqh of Transitions

1.      Fiqh of abolishers (nawaqid), opposers and misleading tribulations; and the means of protection from them in areas of governance, knowledge and economy.

The Arabic word ‘Nawaqid’ is the plural of ‘naqad’ which means the removal of something from its roots and abolishing it completely. The first one will be taking the Shariah Law out and bringing in secularism and the last one is the prayer as stated in the Hadith (below). This term is used to refer to every action and idea that abolishes the foundations of Islam and sparks the fires of conflict by abolishing the well-established essentials of knowledge and belief and what stems from them; or abolishes the essentials of governance and economy and what relates to them in the course of tribulations and tests.

Narrated by Abu Umamah al-Bahili (may Allah be pleased with him): “The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, ‘The knots of Islam will be undone one by one, and whenever one knot is undone, the people will cling to the next one. The first to be undone will be the knot of ruling, and the last will be the knot of prayer.'” – Source: Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 22160

Narrated Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him): “The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, ‘There will come a time when people will deny a truthful person and believe a liar, distrust a trustworthy person and trust the one who is treacherous, and a man will offer his witness even without it being sought, and swear an oath even without being asked to swear. The most privileged (in dunya) person at that time will be the one who is lowly; he does not believe in Allah and His Messenger.’ ” – Source: Sahih Ibn Hibban, Hadith 6760

As for Naqa’id (opposers), it is the plural of naqd, which means any action or idea that brings the opposite of what is the norm (Sharia Law) and acts against or stands in the way of religiously lawful courses of action. The term is used here to refer to every stance adopted by an individual or group that goes against mainstream Islamic thought and rulings, that which is normally supported by evidence, or thinking that goes against what is agreed upon.

In Summary:

·       Nawaqid: To remove the norm (Shariah).

·       Naqaid: To bring the opposite (against Shariah)

Those with negative traits and attributes work persistently to dismantle and remover these values, piece by piece, sowing division among people to achieve their specific goals. Which is to lead the heedless into serving Shaytan and Dajjal. This is a form of fitn (trial) that diverts individuals from the straight path.

Examples include:

·       The introduction of banks with interest, and moving from Islamic business values to Western values of banks and interest.

·       Children being educated in external secular institutions and then imposing what they have learned on their parents.

·       Shifting from Sharia to secularism

However, those with noble attributes, such as the scholars and the rightly guided, dedicate themselves to studying the knowledge of Nawaqid and Naqaid from their original source—the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). As he does not speak from personal desire, but rather divine guidance, this knowledge forms the foundation of the Fiqh of Transition. Through it, we discern the paths of safety and success from the paths of regret and deviation.

“Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination.” – Qur’an: Surah an-Najm 53:3

These scholars delve into the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) regarding the experiences and challenges the Ummah will face, including the signs, conditions, trials (fitna), and paths of deviation. Their aim is to understand these matters deeply, enabling them to safeguard themselves and warn others effectively. This is exemplified in the hadith narrated by Sayyidina Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman, where he inquired about the trials and tribulations to come, so that he might recognise and avoid them, and guide others to do the same.

Narrated by Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him): “People used to ask the Messenger of Allah about the good times, but I used to ask about bad times fearing lest they overtake me…” – Source: Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 56, Hadith 804

This knowledge is intricately tied to the depth of reading and comprehending the meanings within the Quran and Sunnah. It is closely connected to understanding the fitn (trials), the signs, the conditions, and the wars of the end times.

2.      Fiqh of developments in theoretical and applied sciences, cultural development as well as scientific discoveries and compliance with the sacred texts, in addition to various positive and negative scientific discoveries.

·       To study contemporary education and sciences – Staying updated with latest advancements in education and sciences, both positive discoveries (beneficial innovations) and negative ones that have harmful effects; and to be able to use the tools to apply them

·       Gaining knowledge of past and future sciences, and the fruits that come from these, such as discoveries, inventions, and their various services.

·       science of tools (Aalat), such as Astronomy, and the practices of Witchcraft and Palmistry, and understanding their impact on both this world (Dunya) and the hereafter (Akhira).

·       Using beneficial sciences to build and improve oneself personally and for society in compliance with sacred texts – such as, striving for truth, and working for Allah in various aspects such as economy, education, Science, medicine, manufacturing and faith.

This differentiation sets religious scholars apart from those of man-made inventions that lead to destruction.

“And each one will choose the faith they want to go to.” – Quran: Surah Baqarah 2:256

It is crucial to recognise the role individuals play in investing their time, effort and resources in the pursuit of knowledge.

Investors can follow two paths:

·       The Devine Path (Sirat al-Mustaqeem): To call to Allah through the ways of the Prophets and Messengers (peace be upon them), and those connected to them from the righteous scholars. To also follow the believers that gained protection or immunity, and justice and those who followed them in goodness until the Day of Judgement. They will be saved in Dunya and Akhira. This is the prophetic way (Abawi way).

·       The path of Shaytan al-Rajeem: This path represents the tribulations Allah has set for His servants and the negative influences of Shaytan’s calls through the agents of Dajjal (the unbelievers, hypocrites, and those with illnesses in their hearts). The fools who follow this path (from the Islamic Ummah) with knowledge, and understanding and deliberately politicise and does not repent will be deprived of Allah’s mercy and will enter Jahannam.

This dangerous path cannot be understood except through deep comprehension of the Ayat of Allah and the sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him), along with inner sight of the signs. For example, gaining wisdom from past events that benefitted the Ummah.

“And the one from Egypt who bought him said to his wife, ‘Make his stay comfortable. Perhaps he will benefit us, or we will adopt him as a son.’ Thus, We established Joseph in the land to teach him the interpretation of events. And Allah is predominant over His affair, but most people do not know.” – Quran: Surah Yusuf 12:21

3.      Fiqh of indications, glad tidings, warnings, immunity, and dignity bestowed by moral uprightness and chains of transmitting sacred knowledge.

To safeguard oneself from Fitna, it is crucial to acquire sacred knowledge from authentic sources with an unbroken chain of transmission. This knowledge teaches us how to protect ourselves. Glad tidings about forthcoming events, such as the arrival of Imam Mahdi and Prophet Isa where Islam is prosperous are mentioned in ahadiths of the prophet (peace be upon him)

Glad Tidings and Immunity: The ahadiths of the prophet (peace be upon him) offer the best protection from Fitna, especially when accusations are made against the Ahl al-Bayt (the family of the prophet, peace be upon him) and the scholars. The hadith collections of the Prophet (peace be upon him) advise Muslims of the best protection from the tonfues of Fitna and to save oneself from such fitna. For example, Muslims on their actions during times of bloodshed and division.

Narrated by Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him): Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “If you see greed being followed, and the world influencing, and everyone being impressed with their own opinion, then take care of yourself and leave alone what people in general are doing.” – Source: Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 76, Hadith 422.

Protective Measures: The Prophet’s (peace be upon him) advice includes reading Surah Al-Kahf for protection against Dajjal, as well as specific supplications and verses tested for safeguarding against human and jinn as this fitna concern both the inner (Batin) and outer (Tahir) aspects. The Prophet (peace be upon him) also mentioned the deviations caused by fitna, its leaders, and signs. The Prophet also named the fitna and the impact it would have on people, and he mentioned leaders, their followers, and some of its signs, as well as the signs of those who bring about the Fitna.

“When you were on the near side of the valley, and they were on the farther side, and the caravan was lower [in position] than you. If you had made an appointment to meet, you would have missed the appointment. But [it was] so that Allah might accomplish a matter already destined – that those who perished [through disbelief] would perish upon evidence and those who lived [in faith] would live upon evidence. And indeed, Allah is Hearing and Knowing.” – Qur’an: Surah al-Anfal 8:42

This great knowledge, beginning from the time of Adam (AS) until the blow of the trumpet, includes the knowledge of immunity, the sanad (chain of transmission), and the teachings of righteous scholars. It is a specific Fiqh of the Fiqh of Transitions, derived from the quotes and meanings of Ayat (verses) and the wisdom of these righteous scholars/imams. For example, Allah’s mention of Yusuf defending the way he received his knowledge with sanad of Abawi:

“And I followed the religion of my fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. And it was not for us to associate anything with Allah. That is from the favor of Allah upon us and upon the people, but most of the people are not grateful.” – Qur’an: Surah Yusuf 12:38

And Allah explains about those who follow the (Anawi) Shaytani way:

“Those are the ones to whom We gave the Scripture and authority and prophethood. But if they deny it, then We will entrust it to a people who will not be disbelievers in it.” – Qur’an: Surah al-An’am 6:89

Types of Immunity:

1.      Individual Immunity: As mentioned in the hadith, referring to the Ulema (Scholars) and prophets having protection.

  1. Immunity of Different Stages/Phases: There are ahadiths that speak about various stages and phases of conflicting opinions and disputes (Khilaf). During these different stages, specific groups or periods might be protected from Fitna. For example, when the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was with his companions, they were immune from Fitna due to his guidance and presence.

  1. Group Immunity: This immunity pertains to specific groups such as Ahl al-Badr (those who participated in the Battle of Badr) and Ahl al-Bayt (the family of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him).

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “This knowledge will be carried by the trustworthy ones of every generation. They will expel from it the alterations made by those going beyond bounds, the false claims of the liars, and the false interpretations of the ignorant.” – Source: Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 233

4.       Fiqh of cosmic portents and fierce wars.

This includes hadiths and ayats that discuss the changes mentioned in the signs of the Day of Judgement.

These signs include natural disasters, like the khusuf (the opening of the earth and swallowing), earthquakes, fires, tsunami, the smoke; as well as other signs such as, the appearance of the Dajjal (the Antichrist), the emergence of Gog and Magog, the great fire that will drive people to the place of assembly (Mahshar), Ad Dabbah (the beast), the destruction of the Ka’ba, the sun rising from the west to the east.

5.       Fiqh of linking history with religion and understanding events through sacred knowledge.

This knowledge pertains to reading history (the Abawi way) from the prophets (shariah) from the beginning of time until the end, through the Quran and the Sunnah.

Reading the history of the Anawi (human/Shaytan) that people write, and understanding the historical split between religion and history.

This knowledge involves revisiting the Quran with historical and shariah perspectives to tie religion and history together.

Examples include:

  • Study of the creation of Human: Exploring the creation of humans through Ayats and Ahadith, understanding Iblis refusing to perform sajdah to Adam and the consequences of this.
  • Study the period of living in Jannah: Learning the beginning of orders and prohibitions of things (awamir and nawahir), and the fiqh of Shaytan as an enemy to humankind, and the impact he has on them.
  • Descent to Earth: Understanding the duties that separate humans and jinn in life on Earth.

“He said, ‘Descend from it [Paradise]—all, [your descendants] being enemies to one another. And if there should come to you guidance from Me—then whoever follows My guidance will neither go astray [in the world] nor suffer [in the Hereafter].'” – Qur’an: Surah Ta-Ha 20:123

“And whoever turns away from My remembrance—indeed, he will have a depressed [i.e., difficult] life, and We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind.” – Qur’an: Surah Ta-Ha 20:124

The Contrasting Schools:

1.      The Anawi School (The Self-Centred, Shaytani Path):

·       Rooted in rebellion and defiance, this path is associated with Shaytan (Satan) and those connected to him.

·       It is said to have been activated by Iblis through the son of Adam (peace be upon him), Qabil (Cain) in an attempt to establish a human (Anawi) school of kufr (disbelief).

·       This school is described as materialistic, driven by negative traits such as lying, murder, disobedience to parents, following base desires, and rejecting the way of Allah.

·       “Anawi” refers to self-centeredness, symbolising individuals who prioritise their own desires and inclinations over divine guidance.

“I am better than him. You created me from fire, and You created him from clay.” — Qur’an: Surah Al-A’raf 7:12

2.      The Abawi School (The Prophetic Path):

·       This is the opposite path, representing adherence to the way of Allah and the teachings of the prophets.

·       Through the “father” of humanity, Adam (peace be upon him), and exemplified by his son Habil (Abel).

·       This school aligns with Sharia an-Nabawi (the Prophetic Way), focusing on submission to Allah, truthfulness, righteousness, and obedience to divine laws and chain of transmission.

·       It reflects the characteristics of those who follow the straight path as guided by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and all the prophets before him.

“And recite to them the story of Adam’s two sons, in truth, when they both offered a sacrifice [to Allah], and it was accepted from one of them but was not accepted from the other. Said [the latter], ‘I will surely kill you.’ Said [the former], ‘Indeed, Allah only accepts from the righteous [who fear Him].'” – Qur’an: Surah Maida 5:27

This distinction between the two schools is pivotal in understanding the comprehensive journey of human knowledge and their path to Allah. It involves studying the messages delivered by Prophet Adam and all subsequent Prophets (peace be upon them). Each stage, from Prophet Adam to Nuh (Noah), and all the way to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), reflects a continuum of divine revelations aimed at maintaining the Abawi path amidst the challenges posed by the Anawi way. This struggle will go on until the Day of Judgement according to the study of the Science of Fiqh at-Tahawwulat (the Fiqh of Transitions).

Section 2 – The Signs of The Hour (Minor, Middle and Major signs):

The Historic Periods From An Islamic Perspective – As Summarised by Shaykh Ahmad Saad al-Azhari

In order to understand the various Signs and portents of the Day of Judgement, we have to know the division of the successive periods in history from an Islamic perspective and their relation to various Signs and portents:

·       The Major Signs have no relation to early stages of history. They start to appear with the advent of Imam al-Mahdi until the end of the world. The knowledge of the major signs is compulsory (Wajib) to know. There are 10 major signs.

·       The Middle Signs start with the revelation to the prophet and end with the second sufyanic period. It is necessary (Lazim) to learn the knowledge of the middle signs. They carry the characteristics that place them between the earlier minor signs and the major signs to come.

·       The Minor Signs start before the prophet ﷺ and continue until the blow of the trumpet, which marks the end of the world. This is the general (Mutlaq) knowledge of the minor signs that the prophet (peace be upon him) mentioned.

all these signs continue to appear simultaneously in their respective times and places and are known only through landmarks and indications in the process of history.

Based on this reading, we can list the various stages of history based on the words of the prophet ﷺ as follows:

·       The prophetic period of revelation, infallibility and miracles and it contained middle and minor signs.

·       The period of the rightly guided caliphs which is declared to be immune by sacred texts and the fact that it witnessed the agreement of the companions and their standpoints. It contained middle and minor signs.

·       The first period of despotic kingship (The Umayyad Dynasty); it was immune only with respect to the fact that jihad was carried out during it and the faith was preserved. It contained middle and minor signs.

·       The second period of despotic kingship (The Abbasid Dynasty) which contained middle and minor signs.

·       The period of division and statelets. Its immunity was disturbed due to the failure in governance and decision making which was a result of the crusades and the Mongol invasion of the Muslim world. It contained middle and minor signs.

·       The re-establishment of general authority through the Ottoman Empire. Its immunity was derived from the capture of Constantinople and the re-establishment of Islamic general authority, the protection and unity of the Muslim community, gaining the recognition of the Abbasid Caliph. It contained middle and minor signs.

·       The period of worthlessness, which consists of:

§  The stage of internal planning for control (ahlās and istizhār) which contains middle and minor signs.

§  The stage of invader-leadership cooperation for control (al-sarrāʾ) which involves European colonialism and secularisation. It contains middle and minor signs.

§  The stage of laymen assuming mastership, the spread of communism and halving the world between communism and capitalism. It contains middle and minor signs.

§  The stage of the fourth tribulation, the centralised investment and globalisation. It also contains middle and minor signs.

·       The stage of the disaster that eradicates (al-saylamah), the repulsion, and the first and the second sufyanic. It contains middle and minor signs.

·       The period of stability and the appearance of the Mahdi. It contains major and minor signs.

·       The period of the siege, the Dajjalic Period which contains major and minor signs.

·       The period of victory (the coming of Jesus) which contains major and minor signs.

·       The period of decline (the Magogic) which contains major and minor signs.

·       The period of collapse and the complete disappearance of monotheism. It contains major and minor signs.

·       The period of complete destruction and the start of the day of judgment and it is a major sign.

There are many Minor Signs in this list that have occurred and some that we are still waiting for. Some of the Minor signs that have not appeared yet will coincide with the Middle Signs for example: The drying up of the Euphrates river that will expose a mountain of gold. When the people hear about this treasure; they will run from everywhere to get it and fight over it. In every 100,99 people will die and each one will hope that he is the one who will survive and possess it. The proof of this is mentioned in the hadith below:

Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) as saying: “The Hour will not be established until the Euphrates uncovers a treasure of gold, for which people will fight. Ninety-nine out of one hundred will be killed, and each man among them will say, ‘Perhaps I will be the one who remains alive and gains the treasure.’” – Source: Sahih Bukhari (Book 92, Hadith 378, Sahih Muslim (Book 41, Hadith 6918)

Narrated by Hudhayfah Ibn Asid Al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him), the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “The Hour will not come until there are three major landslides: one in the East, one in the West, and one in the Arabian Peninsula.”– Source: Sahih Muslim (Book 41, Hadith 6925)

Narrated by Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “The Hour will not come until markets become so close that people will barely need to travel between them.” – Source: Musnad Ahmad (Hadith 10943)

Narrated by Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “The Hour will not come until people take pride in decorating their mosques.” – Source: Musnad Ahmad, Sahih Ibn Hibban

THE MIDDLE SIGNS

The middle Signs appear between the time of revelation of the Prophet (peace be upon him) to the appearance of Imam Al-Mahdi.

Narrated by Hudhayfah ibn Al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Prophethood shall remain among you as long as God wills. He will bring about its end and follow it with Khilafat on the precepts of Prophethood for as long as He wills and then bring about its end. Kingship shall then follow, to remain as long as God wills and then come to an end. There shall then be monarchical despotism which shall remain as long as God wills and come to an end upon His decree. There will then emerge Khilafat on the precepts of Prophethood.” Then he became silent. – Source: Musnad Ahmad (Hadith 17680)

Amongst the Middle Signs are:

  1. The coming down of revelation.
  2. The death of the Prophet (peace be upon him)

  14. The fall of the Abbasid dynasty at the hands of the Mongol invasion.
  15. The stage of statelets and division.
  16. The re-institution of the Caliphate with the Ottoman state and the conquest of Constantinople.
  17. The start of the stage of worthlessness, which can be divided into:

a.      Stage of ahlas or istizhar: This is the stage that witnessed infiltration and manipulation and it covers the period of plotting to take over the heritage of the Ottoman Empire to the collapse of the caliphate.

b.      Stage of al sarra (colonialism and secularisation): This stage witnessed the treaties and agreements between colonists and leaders from the Arab world and continuation of the world wars to further divide the World War 1 & World War 2.

c.      Stage of Masses-Leadership: this stage witnesses the spread of communism, revolutions and the Cold War between capitalism and communism.

d.      The fourth tribulation which witnesses massive destruction and leads the Muslim community into the abyss of disbelief (centralised investment and globalisation) and the world order. This is the killing of Arabs and non-Arabs. This is a current war happening in the world.

e.      The disaster that eradicates (al saylamah) which is a stage that witnesses repulsion and creative chaos (people breathing under the supervision of disbelief).

18.  The first and second Sufyanic stages in which there is mass killing and chaos (people looking for salvation). In this stage, there will be a return to tribalism, division, injustice and there is no specific time span for it.

THE MAJOR SIGNS

These are the Signs that are specifically mentioned by the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) in a group of hadith; they are:

  1. The Mahdi: who represents the appearance of Islamic unity and social justice after an extensive stage of injustice.
  2. The Dajjal: who represents the spreading of corruption in the world and his appearance will be a great factor in the rise of global disbelief.
  3. Jesus, son of Mary: who will descend in the Levant, break the cross, kill the swine, establish justice and kill the Dajjal and his supporters except those who believe and will restore justice and establish Islamic Shariah.
  4. Gog and Magog: who will appear in the east and massively travel in the earth until they die in the land of Levant towards the end of the stage of Jesus.
  5. The appearance of the Smoke.
  6. The three khusuf.
  7. The Gathering Fire.
  8. The Beast.
  9. The rising of the Sun from the west.
  10. The blow of the Trumpet.

Narrated by Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “By Him in Whose Hand is my soul, surely the son of Mary will soon descend among you as a just ruler.” – Source: Sahih Bukhari (Book 60, Hadith 3448) and Sahih Muslim (Book 1, Hadith 287).

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “A fire will emerge from Yemen and drive the people to the place of gathering.” – Source: Sahih Bukhari (Book 76, Hadith 488) and Sahih Muslim (Book 41, Hadith 7

IMAM AL-MAHDI

Who is Imam Mahdi and What did the Prophet (peace be upon him) say about him?

Imam Mahdi is from the noble family of Ahlul Bayt (the family of the prophet, peace be upon him), specifically from the lineage of Fatimah (RA), and he is part of the Khulafa’ al-Rashidun (the rightly guided caliphs). He will be the prince of justice, the rectifier of wrongs, and one of the Siddiqeen (the truthful). His rule will be marked by a commitment to the Sunnah, and he will not initiate conflict or cause unnecessary bloodshed. He will not disturb the peace of the people unnecessarily, nor will he wake anyone from their sleep without a just cause.

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Masood (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The world will not come to an end until the Arabs are ruled by a man from my family whose name will be the same as mine and his father’s name is like mine.” – Source: Musnad Ahmad (Hadith 3571) and Sunan Abu Dawood (Hadith 4282

Imam Mahdi will have the following physical appearance:

Narrated by Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The Mahdi will be of my lineage, with a broad forehead and a prominent nose. He will fill the earth with justice and equity as it was filled with oppression and tyranny, and he will rule for seven years.” – Source: Sunan Abu Dawood (Book 36, Hadith 4272).

Ahlu Sunnah wal Jama‘ah believe that the appearance of Imam Mahdi is the doorway to the Major signs of the Day of Judgment because during his khilafa, Prophet Isa (peace be upon him] and the Dajjal will come who are both from the Major Signs.

Narrated by Hudhayfah ibn Asid Al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came out to us when we were discussing the Hour. He said: ‘What are you discussing?’ They said: ‘We are talking about the Hour.’ He said: ‘It will never begin until you see ten signs before it.’ He mentioned: the smoke, the Dajjal (the Antichrist), the Beast, the rising of the sun from its place of setting, the descent of ‘Isa ibn Maryam (peace and blessings be upon him), Yajuj and Majuj, and three landslides—one in the east, one in the west, and one in the Arabian Peninsula. And the last of that is a fire which will emerge from Yemen and drive the people to their place of gathering.’ “ – Source: Sahih Muslim (Book 41, Hadith 6931).

Narrated by Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The signs of the Hour will emerge in quick succession, one after another, just like the beads of a string falling when its thread is cut.” – Source: Sahih Muslim (Book 41, Hadith 7050).

Before the arrival of imam Mahdi, a time of great turmoil will occur, with people fighting over the treasure of Makkah.

Narrated by Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Three will fight one another for your treasure, each one of them the son of a Caliph, but none of them will gain it. Then the black banners will come from the East, and they will kill you in an unprecedented manner.” Then he mentioned something that I do not remember, then he said: “When you see him, then pledge your allegiance to him even if you have to crawl over the snow, for that is the Caliph of Allah, the Mahdi.” – Source: Sunan Ibn Majah (Book 36, Hadith 4082).

He will be given the bay‘ah (allegiance) in Makkah, specifically between the Rukn al-Yamani (the Yemeni corner of the Ka’bah) and Maqam Ibrahim by a group of scholars, who will recognise and identify him. However, initially, he will not be aware of his status as the Mahdi and will hesitate to accept giving the bay‘ah (allegiance). After enduring numerous trials and struggles, he will finally accept it, marking the first bay‘ah. The proof is mentioned in the Hadith below.

Narrated by Umm Salamah, the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): “There will be discord when a Khaleefa (ruler) dies. A man from the inhabitants of Madeenah will flee to Makkah, and people will come to him from the dwellers of Makkah. They will bring him out (to the people), yet he will be averse to what they want of him (to be their leader). Then they will pledge allegiance to him between the Rukn (i.e. the Black Stone) and the Maqaam (the Station of Ibraaheem in Makkah). An army will be sent to (attack) him from Sham (Syria and surrounding areas), and they will be swallowed up (by a Khasf) in Al-Baidaa — a place between Makkah and Al-Madinah. When people see that, the Abdaal from Sham will come to him, and the best people from Iraq will come and pledge allegiance to him. Then a man from the Quraish (the ruling tribe of Makkah) will appear; his uncles are from the children of Kalb (ruling tribe of Syria today). He will send an army to them but they (the Mahdi’s army) will be victorious over them… Wealth will be distributed, and people will apply the Sunnah of their Prophet. Islam will achieve stability and firmness in the earth. That will last for seven years, after which (after this period ends) the Mahdi will die and the Muslims will pray over him.” – Source: Sunan Abu Dawood, Ibn Kathir in al-Bidaya wa Nihaya.

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Masood (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “When the black flags come from Khurasan, go to them, for among them is the Khalifah of Allah, the Mahdi.” – Source: Jami` at-Tirmidhi (Hadith 2232)

In that moment, Allah will transform him from an ordinary man into the ruler of the world overnight. He will be endowed with divine knowledge, wisdom, generosity, courage, and bravery, all in an instant. His appearance will coincide with a time when the world is overwhelmed with injustice, oppression, and bloodshed, unlike anything ever seen before. He will come to restore justice, light, and peace to the earth, just as it was previously filled with darkness and tyranny.

Under his rule, the earth will bring forth its crops, and the sky will shower abundant rain. Wealth will flow in abundance, and his leadership will bring prosperity and harmony to the people. Imam Mahdi will rule for about seven years (in other narrations 5,7 or 9 years) living his life in strict accordance with the Sunnah, reviving the religion and guiding humanity toward righteousness in the final days.

Imam Mahdi will fight in accordance with the Sunnah, reviving practices and abolishing innovations (bid‘ah). He will bring to life every Sunnah that has been forgotten, restoring the true teachings of Islam, just as the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) did in the beginning of Islam. His time will be one of prosperity and blessings like no other. He will have great wealth, which he will distribute equitably among the people, ensuring no one is deprived.

The creatures of the earth and sky will live in harmony with him—whether birds in the sky, animals on the earth, or fish in the sea. They will all be content and at peace during his reign. The hearts of the Ummah (the Muslim community) will be filled with contentment, and they will experience blessings, both in good times and in hardship. His time will be a period of unimaginable blessings, and the sky will send its rains without holding back.

Imam Mahdi will truly be the leader who restores justice, peace, and prosperity, uniting the people of the earth under the banner of Islam in a way that the world has never witnessed before.

Narrated by Nu’man ibn Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him). The prophet) peace be upon him) said: “Prophethood will remain amongst you for as long as Allah wills. Then Allah will remove it when He wills. Then there will be Khilafah upon the methodology of Prophethood, and it will remain for as long as Allah wills. Then Allah will remove it when He wills. Then there will be hereditary rule (ملكًا عاضًا), and it will remain for as long as Allah wills. Then Allah will remove it when He wills. Then there will be oppressive rule (ملكًا جبرية), and it will remain for as long as Allah wills. Then Allah will remove it when He wills. Then there will be a Khilafah upon the methodology of Prophethood.” – Source: Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 17680

Narrated by Naafi’ ibn Utbah (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: “We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in a battle. Some people came to him from the direction of the west. They were dressed in woollen clothes and they met him on a hillock. They stood while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting. I said to myself: ‘Go and stand between them and him, lest they should assassinate him.’ Then I said to myself that he was probably having a private conversation with them. However, I went to them and stood between them and him. I kept to my memory four things that he (the Prophet) said, which I count on my fingers: ‘You will invade the Arabian Peninsula and Allah will conquer it; then Persia and Allah will conquer it; then you will attack the Byzantines and Allah will conquer them; then you will attack the Dajjal (Anti-Christ) and Allah will conquer him.’ ” – Source: Sahih Muslim (Book 41, Hadith 6924).

Narrated by Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Out of Aden-Abyan will come 12,000, giving victory to the religion of Allah and His Messenger. They are the best between me and them.” – Source: Musnad Ahmad (Hadith 27548).

The ambiguity surrounding Imam Al-Mahdi holds profound wisdom. If his identity were made explicit, there are those who might attempt to harm him or obstruct his mission. Despite not knowing who he is, oppressors still persecute the Ahlul-Bayt,

It was mentioned by scholars, that some groups of the madhabs spoke about his birth and mission. Some have stated that he has already been born but remains in concealment, awaiting the appointed time to emerge and fulfil his divine role. When the time comes, it will unfold exactly as Allah wills it.

Some of the Signs of the Appearance of Imam Mahdi:

  1. Disruption of Transportation and Trade: When the trade and the road is cut and increase in fitna, ibn masood
  2. Increase in killing: Another narration states: “The Mahdi will not come until, out of nine people, seven will be killed.” (Kitab al-Fitan by Naeem ibn Hammad).

Al-Junayd ibn Maymun, from Safwan ibn Amr, from Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The fourth fitna will be blind and dark, it will rage like the waves of the sea. There will not be a house, whether among the Arabs or non-Arabs, that it will not fill with humiliation and fear. It will spread in the Levant (Sham), it will cover Iraq, and will strike the Arabian Peninsula with its hands and feet. The nation will be turned over in it like leather being tanned, and the calamity in it will intensify until what is known becomes unrecognisable, and what is unknown will be recognised. No one will be able to say ‘stop’ (maḥ maḥ), and they will not be able to repair it from one side except that it will split open on another. A man will wake up in the morning as a believer and go to bed as a disbeliever. The only ones to be saved from it will be those who make supplication like the drowning person calling out in the sea. It will last for twelve years, and when it is over, the Euphrates River will recede to reveal a mountain of gold. People will fight over it, and from every nine, seven will be killed.” – Source: Nu’aym ibn Hamad al-Khuza’I, Kitab al-Fitan (676)

  1. Weakness and Depression Amongst Muslims: During this time, Muslims will feel weakened and depressed by the continuous tribulations and events taking place.
  2. A Loud Sound in Ramadan: It is reported that a cosmic event will occur, producing a loud sound in Ramadan, before the Mahdi’s appearance. This sound, originating from the heavens, will serve as a sign.

On the authority of Ibn Mas’ud, he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “When there is a Sayhah (loud sound) in Ramadan, there will be bloodshed in Shawwal, and the tribes will form groups in Dhul-Qi’dah, and blood will be spilt in Dhul-Hijjah, and al-Muharram! What will happen in al-Muharram?” The Prophet (peace be upon him) repeated this three times. “Indeed, indeed! The people will be killed in a great massacre.”

The Companions then asked: “What is the Sayhah, O Messenger of Allah?” He replied: “It is in the middle of Ramadan on a Friday night. It will be a blast that awakens the sleeper, makes the one standing sit down, and brings maidens out from their seclusion. It will happen on a Friday night in a year with many earthquakes and extreme cold. If Ramadan in that year coincides with a Friday night, then when you pray Fajr on the Friday in mid-Ramadan, enter your homes, shut your doors, block your windows, cover yourselves, and plug your ears. If you feel the blast, then fall down in prostration to Allah and say: ‘Glory be to the Most Holy (Subḥān al-Quddūs), Glory be to the Most Holy, our Lord the Most Holy.’ Whoever does that will be saved, and whoever does not will perish.” – Source: Nu‘aym ibn Hammaad’s Kitab al-Fitan (160/1)

  1. The Coming of the Black Flags from Khorasan (Northeastern Iran, southern Turkmenistan, and northern Afghanistan): Muslims will support the cause of Imam Mahdi.

Additionally, Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “If I were in a locked box, I would break that box and follow them.” (Kinzil al-‘umal). This demonstrates the significance of joining the cause of Imam Al-Mahdi.

A Muslim must exercise thorough investigation, ensuring clarity when discerning who the rightful leader is. There will be discord among Muslims, fuelled by confusion over the signs of the Mahdi. It is crucial not to act impulsively based on similarities in signs, as these can often be misleading. Allah’s commands stand apart— it is divine, untainted by the influence of worldly politics.

The Qualities of Imam al-Mahdi:

  1. He will uphold the Sunnah and eliminate Bid’ah (innovation in religion).

Narrated Abdullah ibn Mas’ud: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “If only one day of this world remained. Allah would lengthen that day (according to the version of Za’idah), till He raised up in it a man who belongs to me or to my family whose father’s name is the same as my father’s, who will fill the earth with equity and justice as it has been filled with oppression and tyranny.” (according to the version of Fitr). – Source: Sunan Abi Dawud 4282

  1. He will rule the entire world, as Dhul-Qarnayn and prophet Suleyman (peace be upon them) once did.

Ibn Abbas narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Four have ruled the world: two believers and two disbelievers. The two believers were Dhul-Qarnayn and Suleyman, and the two disbelievers were Nimrod and Nebuchadnezzar. The fifth to rule will be from my Ahlul-Bayt (the Mahdi, peace be upon him).” – Source: History in tafsirnnya Tabari, 5/43, Mustadrak al-Hakim 4143 Fatawi Ibn Taymiyyah

The First Stage of the Mahdi:

  1. He will spread Islam among non-believing nations and challenge the concept of the Trinity. However, the complete eradication of this belief will be achieved by prophet Isa (peace be upon him).
  2. He will possess great wealth and provide for the economic needs of nations, distributing wealth with fairness and justice.
  3. He will abolish interest and reject economic systems like communism, capitalism, and any other man-made theories.
  4. He will unify the nations’ perspectives to return to governance through the caliphate, ending the innovation of political parties and resolving conflicts based on class, beliefs, sects, and politics.
  5. He will bring the Muslims back to the original essence of Islam, free from shirk, bid’ah, and deviations. He will also address the politicisation of madhabs, combat extremism in belief, and remain strict with leaders while being generous to the poor. Some scholars may even question if he is the Mahdi, as noted by Imam al-Barzanji in his writings.
  6. He will redefine the concepts of freedom and human rights, aligning them with the true principles of Islam with an emphasis on its softness, compassion, and forgiving nature. He will eliminate the influences of deviated cultures on education, media, and society etc.
  7. There will be barakah in food, crops, and livestock, fostering self-sufficiency. He will restore the relationships between people, fostering mercy and understanding, particularly during the early stages of his life to establish political and economic systems.
  8. He will engage in battles against the army of the second Sufyani, eventually capturing him, leading to his killing in Sham.
  9. He will form a truce with the Romans (the West), gaining the obedience of world leaders for several years. During this period, Muslims will become strong, Shariah will be implemented across the Muslim world, and the Ummah will regain its global prestige. Peace will prevail with many non-Muslim states, including the Jewish state. There will be no war.

The Second Stage of the Mahdi:

  1. The Romans will break the truce, and war will resume. They will attack Sham and seize control, but Imam Mahdi will lead victorious battles against them. He will strike at their own territories and bring the war booty to Bayt al-Maqdis.
  2. As Imam Mahdi’s victories increase, the Dajjal will emerge personally. This will intensify the wars, and jihad fi sabilillah (struggle in the cause of Allah) will revive across many regions. The Muslims will conquer India.

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “A group from my Ummah will conquer India, and when they do, their sins will be forgiven.” – Source: Musnad Ahmad, Al-Hakim’s Mustadrak, Na’im ibn Hammad’s Kitab al-Fitan

It was narrated that Thawban, the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘There are two groups of my Ummah whom Allah will free from the Fire: The group that invades India, and the group that will be with ‘Isa bin Maryam, peace be upon him.'” – Source: Sunan an-Nasa’i 3175

Abu Hurayrah reported: The prophet (peace be upon him) said: “In the hand of that Yemeni leader, that will conquer Constantinople and Romia, in his time Dajjal will appear, in his time Esa bin Maryam will come, in his time India will be conquered, and he will be form Bani Hashim.” – Source: The Book of Fitn, Naeem bin Hammad

DAJJAL (The Antichrist)

There are numerous hadiths about the Dajjal, and extensive explanations about him. Here, we will focus on the most significant ones, as the Dajjal holds a critical place in Fiqh al-Tahawwulat (the Fiqh of Transitions). This is because the historical events and deviations that occur are deeply interconnected with the trials brought forth by this destructive figure. The Dajjal holds a significant position in Islam, both as a historical concept and as a figure of immense trial in the coming future.

Who is Dajjal and what does he do?

Narrated by Imran ibn Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “There is no greater trial (fitnah) from the time of Adam until the Hour than that of the Dajjal.” – Source: Sahih Muslim (Book 41, Hadith 7015)

Narrated by Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “He (Dajjal) will be a young man with curly hair and a protuberant eye; I liken him to ‘Abdul-‘Uzza bin Qatan. Both of his eyes are deficient—one of his eyes is wiped out and another is dangling like a grape. On his forehead, the word ‘K-F-R’ (disbeliever) is written, and only the believers will be able to see it, whether they are literate or illiterate.” – Source: Sahih Muslim (Book 41, Hadith 7010).

Dajjal will come to remove the Justice that Imam Mahdi filled with the earth and will corrupt it once again with disbelief, oppression, famine (to the believers) and giving wealth to those who obey him.

Narrated Tamim al-Dari (may Allah be pleased with him): “We went on a sea voyage in a ship. There were thirty of us, from the tribe of Lakhm and Jutham. The sea carried us to an island in the evening, and we disembarked. We went on until we came across a beast that was so large and covered with hair that we couldn’t distinguish its front from its back. We said, ‘Woe to you! Who are you?’ It said, ‘I am Al-Jassasa.’ We asked, ‘What is Al-Jassasa?’ It said, ‘Go to that man in the monastery, for he is eager to see you.’ When we went to him, we found a man who was shackled and chained in the most horrible manner. We asked, ‘Woe to you! Who are you?’ He replied, ‘You will soon know who I am, but tell me who you are.’ We said, ‘We are a group of Arabs, we are from the people of the Arabian Peninsula. We were traveling when we were carried by the sea to this island, and we have been here for a month.’ The man asked, ‘Has the date-palm of Baysan (a town in Palestine) borne fruit?’ We replied, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘Soon its fruit will wither and dry up.’ He then asked, ‘Has the Lake of Tiberias (the Sea of Galilee) still got water in it?’ We said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘Soon it will dry up.’ He asked, ‘Has there appeared the unlettered Prophet, who has come from the Hijaz?’ We said, ‘Yes.’ He asked, ‘What did he do?’ We replied, ‘He has left Mecca and settled in Yathrib (Medina).’ He said, ‘Does he fight the Arabs?’ We said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘How did he deal with them?’ We said, ‘He fought them, and they fought him, but he has gained the upper hand and his followers have increased.’ He said, ‘I tell you that he is the Prophet of the unlettered people (the Prophet Muhammad), and soon his people will conquer this land. I am the Dajjal. When I am freed, I will come to you, and I will be given the power to cause destruction. I will travel around the world, and I will be seen by every person in every place.’” – Source: Sahih Muslim, Book 54, Hadith 7, Sunan Abu Dawood, Book 37, Hadith 4317

After this encounter, Tamim al-Dari returned to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and informed him of the events. The Prophet (peace be upon him) confirmed the details, and Tamim al-Dari eventually became a Muslim. The Prophet (peace be upon him) mentioned that the encounter with Al-Jassasa and the Dajjal was a sign of the impending emergence of the Dajjal.

Narrated Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “The Dajjal will emerge from Khallah, between Sham (Syria) and Iraq, and will wreak havoc right and left. O slaves of Allah, remain steadfast.” When asked how long he would stay on earth, the Prophet (peace be upon him) replied, “Forty days: one day like a year, one day like a month, one day like a week, and the rest like regular days.” When asked if prayers for one day like a year would suffice, he advised, “Make an estimate of time and then observe prayer.” He further explained that the Dajjal would move like a rain cloud driven by the wind, and he would call some people, who would believe in him. He would then command the sky to rain, and the earth to produce vegetation, making their livestock healthier than ever. However, those who rejected him would face drought and deprivation. The Dajjal would also pass through wastelands, causing treasures to follow him like a swarm of bees. He would be accompanied by 70,000 Jews from Asfahan (Iran), wearing woollen cloaks. The Dajjal would not be able to enter Makkah or Madinah, and Madinah would shake three times to rid itself of hypocrites. – Source: Sahih Muslim, Book 54, Hadith 118, Sunan Abu Dawood, Book 37, Hadith 4319

Positions of dajjal:

1.      The dajjal and his place in human history.

2.      The place of dajjal in the history of the final message of Islam.

3.      The importance of understanding the dajjal as ideology and as a person.

It was narrated that Abu Umamah Al-Bahili said: The prophet (peace be upon him) said: ‘There will not be any tribulation on earth, since the time Allah created the offspring of Adam, that will be greater than the tribulation of Dajjal. Allah has not sent any Prophet, but he warned his nation about Dajjal. I am the last of the Prophets, and you are the last of the nations. He will undoubtedly appear among you…’ – Source: Sunan Ibn Majah 4077

Narrated Abu Huraira: I have loved the people of the tribe of Bani Tamim ever since I heard, three things, Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said about them. I heard him saying, “These people (of the tribe of Bani Tamim) would stand firm against Ad-Dajjal.” – Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 2543

There are two phases related to Dajjal:

1.      The fitna (trial) before his appearance (arrival)

2.      His physical arrival in the world

These two phases impact the lives of nations and people differently. Every diversion from the path of religion from the time of Adam [AS] to the coming of Dajjal and until the end of time comes under the name of the fitna of Dajjal.

In the initial phase, Dajjal will orchestrate his deceitful politics from afar without him being physically present. This groundwork will pave the way for his eventual physical manifestation. His arrival will be at the end, overlapping with the conclusion of Imam Mahdi’s period and the beginning of Prophet Isa’s (peace be upon him) reign.

Various hadiths describe Dajjal’s arrival and his subsequent journey on Earth. They also highlight signs indicating the establishment of his state within the humanity.

Narrated ‘umran bin al-Hussayn: The prophet (peace be upon him) said, “The dajjal has eaten food and he has walked in their bazzars [market].” – Source:  Al Ma’jab al-Kabeer, al-Tabbarani

1.      The Fitna of Dajjal before his appearance

The influence of the Dajjal began through political means, paving the way for a system that deviates towards corruption and distortion of the truth—known as the Dajjali way. The people who propagate this ideology are the ones who bring this corrupt system to life, ultimately leading to the destruction of true religious values in nations.

The ideologies that shape human thought are, in essence, a manifestation of the Dajjal’s influence in the world. These ideologies are rooted in kufr, which is the very belief system of Shaytan. The Dajjal’s mission is to draw people toward these deviations, which inevitably lead them to disbelief (kufr). This is accomplished through the politicisation of both religious rulings and knowledge.

the Dajjal’s influence manipulates religious rulings and knowledge, turning them into secular and politicised tools that serve his agenda, ultimately distorting the true essence of religion and leading people away from the truth.

Allah has bestowed him with many abilities—in science, physical along with a long life, all of which are part of Allah’s divine wisdom that we cannot fully comprehend.

The Dajjal has a belief and an ideology known as al-Dajjal, which aims to spread falsehood (baatil) disguised as truth—such as the Darwinian theory, for instance.

He uses fear and terror to expand his influence, a tactic that can be observed in the media.

The politics movement of the Jews are seen as part of a cultural movement, leading toward the rise of the Antichrist (Dajjal).

There is strong tie between the dajjal and other dajjajila (Dajjali figures) who are the scholars in the religion and the world – playing a role in manufacturing and distorting religious teachings of sacred texts to serve the desires of Shaytan and the Dajjal in this world.

The most important aspect is the Fiqh at-Tahawwulat (transitions) and its relationship with the politics of the Dajjal, which can be understood through the hadiths narrated regarding this issue.

One of the key hadiths that highlight the dangers of this creature and its fitna is the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) repeated emphasis on seeking refuge in our prayers from the fitna of Maseeh al-Dajjal. This is a great sign from the prophet (peace be upon him) about the importance of seeking protection and acquiring knowledge about it.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) stated that the Dajjal himself is not as dangerous as the real danger lies in how the Ummah will fall into his fitna through various means—such as education, seminars, culture, media, economics, and politics—which will facilitate and ensure the success of the Dajjal’s journey and agenda.

Shaddad ibn Aws reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, I do not fear for my nation anything but the Imams of misguidance. For when the sword is raised among my nation, it will not be removed from them until the Day of Resurrection.” – Source: Sahih Ibn Hibban 4570

Narrated Abu Umamah Al-Bahili: The prophet (peace be upon him) said: “There will not be any tribulation on earth, since the time Allah created the offspring of Adam, that will be greater than the tribulation of Dajjal.” – Source: Sunan Ibn Majah 4077

Narrated Ibn Umar: ‘Once Allah’s Apostle stood amongst the people, glorified and praised Allah as He deserved and then mentioned the Dajjal saying, “l warn you against him (i.e. the Dajjal) and there was no prophet but warned his nation against him. No doubt, Noah warned his nation against him but I tell you about him something of which no prophet told his nation before me. You should know that he is one-eyed, and Allah is not one-eyed.” – Source: Sahih Bukhari, Sunan Abu Dawood, Sunan at-Tirmidhi, Sunan Ahmad

If you can safeguard yourself from his fitna, you will be able to protect yourself from him when he appears. This is why the Prophet (peace be upon him) instructed us to hold tightly to his way and the way of the Khulafa Rashideen (the Rightly Guided Caliphs), urging us to grip it tightly, as if biting onto it, and never let go.

2.      His physical arrival in the world

After the victory of Imam Mahdi against the Romans, Dajjal will emerge in vengeance and anger, accompanied by 70,000 Jews from Isfahan, as the hadith describes – 13,000 of them being women He will first call people to belief, urging them towards faith and piety—gradually gaining followers.

His journey will take him to Kufa in Iraq, where he will claim to be a prophet. However, when people reject him, he will escalate his claim, declaring himself to be a god. The signs of his kufr will become evident, and he will openly announce his true identity.

The economic situation will become extremely difficult, with hunger and poverty spreading among the people. As the hadith mentions,

Narrated Abu Hudhayfa The prophet (peace be upon him) said: “There will come a time when people will wish for the arrival of Dajjal…” They asked: ‘Why is that O Messenger of Allah’. He replied: “Because of the immense illnesses and hardship they will endure.” – Source: Tabbarani

Dajjal will remain on earth for 40 days. His arrival will coincide with a time when religion has weakened, with people no longer taking it seriously and knowledge becoming scarce. He will lead the Bedouins into fitna and perform deceptive miracles, such as bringing the dead back to life. He will make the clouds rain, causing the earth to release all its treasures to make people believe he is God. He will also speed up time, rapidly moving from one place to another.

Narrated by Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Dajjal will approach a Bedouin and ask him, ‘Will you believe in me if I bring your mother and father back to life?’ The Bedouin, astonished and eager, will respond, ‘Yes, I will.’ Then, Dajjal will perform his deceptive act by turning two devils (shayatin) into the Bedouin’s parents. When the Bedouin sees them, he will believe that they are truly his parents, and in his disbelief, he will accept the Dajjal as his lord.” – Source: Sahih Muslim, Book 54, Hadith 118, Sunan Abu Dawood, Book 37, Hadith 4319

Narrated Nawwas ibn Sam’an (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)said: “The Dajjal will meet a young boy and ask him, ‘Do you believe that I am your Lord?’ The boy will reply, ‘No, you are the Dajjal.’ Then the Dajjal will order that the boy be cut in half, and after the boy is split into two, the Dajjal will walk between the two halves. Then he will command the boy to stand up, and the boy will be resurrected. The Dajjal will ask, ‘Do you believe in me now?’ The boy will reply, ‘I am more certain now that you are the Dajjal.'” – Source: Sahih Muslim, Book 54, Hadith 118

Dajjal will defeat the Iranians, then pass Iraq and then to the Arabian Peninsula. He will reach the boundaries of Makkah and Madinah (He is unable to enter these two holy cities). He will go to the Levant (Sham), where Imam Mahdi’s army are under siege on the Mountain of Smoke near Bayt al-Maqdis. Dajjal and his army will strengthen the siege, bringing even greater hardship to the Muslims.

He will surround Bayt al-Maqdis with his army and cut off the Palestinian land from Bayt al-Maqdis, preventing the other Muslims from reaching it to aid the Mahdi.

The siege will continue, and prophet Isa (AS), the son of Maryam, will descend near the white minaret in the east of Damascus. From there, he will make his way towards Bayt al-Maqdis to support Imam Mahdi on the mountain, where they are under siege. Isa (AS) will join the Muslims in praying the fajr prayer behind Imam Mahdi, as a Ma’mum (follower in prayer). Prophet Isa (AS) will call the Muslims to fight in jihad fi sabilillah (struggle in the path of Allah), and their battle cry will be “Iftah!” meaning “Open!” Dajjal will then flee to the depths of Palestine, with prophet Isa (AS) pursuing him to Bab al-Lut, where he will kill him. With Dajjal’s defeat, Allah will bring victory over the Jews.

Thawban narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “I only fear for my Ummah from the misguiding A’immah.” He said that the Messenger of Allah(s.a.w) said: “There will never cease to be a group from my Ummah manifest upon the truth, they will not be harmed by those who forsake them until Allah’s Decree comes.” – Source: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2229

Abu Umaamah Al-Baahili narrated: “…while their Imaam will have advanced to pray the Fajr prayer with them, Isa, the son of Mary will descend [at the time of the Fajr prayer]. The Imaam will draw backward so that ‘Isa (AS) would go forward and lead the people in prayer. However, ‘Isa (AS) would put his hand between his shoulders and say to him: “Go forward and pray, as it is for you that the call for the prayer was called, so their Imaam would lead them in prayer.” – Source: Ibn Maajah

Narrated Nawwas ibn Sam’an Al-Kilabi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) mentioned Dajjal one morning as something despised but also alarming, until we thought that he was in the stand of date-palm trees. When we came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) in the evening, he saw that fear in us and said, “What is the matter with you?” We said, “O Messenger of Allah, you mentioned Dajjal this morning, and you spoke of him as something despised but also alarming, until we thought that he was in the stand of date-palm trees.” He replied, “There are things that I fear more for you than the Dajjal. If he appears while I am among you, I will contend with him on your behalf, and if he appears when I am not among you, then each man must fend for himself, and Allah will take care of every Muslim on my behalf.” – Source: Sahih Muslim, Book 1, Hadith 329, Sunan Abu Dawood, Book 37, Hadith 4319

Narrated Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him):The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: “A believer will go to the Dajjal, thinking he is strong, but he will be overcome by the fitnah and end up following the Dajjal.” – Source: Sahih Muslim, Book 54, Hadith 118

Narrated Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him):The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: “There will come a time when men will have to tie their women to keep them from going to the Dajjal because he will have so much worldly attraction (fitnah).” – Source: Sahih Muslim, Book 54, Hadith 118

This is one of the many tests and trials that will occur during the time of the Dajjal, as he deceives and misleads people with his false miracles and manipulations.

Narrated Umaamah (May Allah be pleased with him): The prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever amongst you meets him (the Dajjaal), let him spit in his face and recite the first verses of Soorah Al-Kahf.” – Source: Al-Haakim (al-Mustadrak), at-Tabaraani (al-Mu’jam al-Kabeer) and Ath-Thahabi

Abu Dardaa’ (May Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever memorises the first ten verses of Soorah Al-Kahf will be protected (by Allaah) from the Dajjaal.” – Source: Muslim

Dajjal will appear with a river in one hand and fire in the other. Those who reject him will be cast into what appears to be fire, and those who follow him will be led to what seems like a river—though in reality, the truth is the opposite.

Narrated Hudhaifa: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said ‘Ad-Dajjal would have water and fire with him: (what would seem to be) fire, would be cold water and (what would seem to be) water, would be fire.’ – Source: Bukhari

Most of those who will follow Dajjal are unbelievers, hypocrites, immoral individuals, some Bedouins, women, and Jews. Dajjal will draw people towards him by tempting them with the allure of worldly pleasures, encouraging them to indulge in haram (forbidden) actions, and leading them to follow their desires.

Narrated Anas ibn Maalik that the prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The Dajjaal will be followed by seventy thousand Jews of Isfahan dressed in Tayaalisah (sing. Taylasaan; a Persian mantle or shawl).” – Source: Muslim

Ibn ‘Umar narrated: The prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The Dajjaal will come to this barren place in Marriqanaah (a valley on the outskirts of Madeenah), and most of those who would come out to him would be women, so much so that a man would go back to his wife, mother, daughter, sister, and paternal aunt to tie them up tight, fearing that they might go out to him…” – Source: Musnad Ahmad 5353

The above hadith does not mean the majority of the people on earth, rather the majority of people in some of the places he will go to.

Prophet Isa (‘Alayhi Salaam)

The descent of Isa (Peace be upon him) is one of the most significant signs of the Hour. Studying his return is essential in understanding the Shari’ah, particularly within the context of the fourth pillar of religion—the Signs of the Hour.

“He was not but a servant upon whom We bestowed favor, and We made him an example for the Children of Israel.” – Qur’an: Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:59

“And if We willed, We could have made [instead] of you angels succeeding [one another] on the earth.” – Qur’an: Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:60

“And indeed, he [i.e., Jesus] will be [a sign for] knowledge of the Hour, so be not in doubt of it, and follow Me. This is a straight path.” – Qur’an: Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:61

Due to the importance of this subject, Allah addressed it in the Qur’an to refute the falsehoods propagated by the Jews regarding the killing and crucifixion of Isa (AS).

“And [for] their saying, ‘Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah.’ And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it except the following of assumption. And they did not kill him, for certain.”

“Rather, Allah raised him to Himself. And ever is Allah Exalted in Might and Wise.”

“Every one of the People of the Book will definitely believe in him before his death. And on the Day of Judgment Jesus will be a witness against them.”

– Qur’an: Surah Nisa 4: 157 – 169

Narrated by Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “By Him in Whose Hands my soul is, surely (Jesus,) the son of Mary will soon descend amongst you and will judge mankind justly (as a Just Ruler); he will break the Cross and kill the pigs and there will be no Jizya (i.e., taxation taken from non-Muslims). Money will be in abundance so that nobody will accept it, and a single prostration to Allah (in prayer) will be better than the whole world and whatever is in it.” Abu Huraira added: “If you wish, you can recite (this verse of the Holy Book): ‘And there is none of the people of the Scriptures (Jews and Christians) but must believe in him (i.e., Jesus as an Apostle of Allah and a human being) before his death. And on the Day of Judgment, he will be a witness against them.'” – Qur’an: Surah Nisa 4 159

– Source: Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 3448

This shows the importance of rejecting the old political systems that the Jews, Christians, the Dajjal, as well as their followers once followed. With the arrival and leadership of prophet Isa (AS), there will be no more provocative politics intended to stir up conflict, division, or unrest among people (Tahreej). This is a tactic used by the jews, Christians, and the dajajala (the followers and supporters of Dajjal) to incite division, create conflict, and plunder the wealth of nations. These divisive and exploitative strategies is the principles of Shaytan. It is based on divide and conquer. The coming of Isa (AS) will bring an end to these social and economic issues, and the remaining Jews and Christians will embrace Islam.

“And there is none from the People of the Scripture but that he will surely believe in him before his death. And on the Day of Resurrection, he will be against them a witness.” – Qur’an: Surah Nisa 4 159

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “The Hour will not be established until the son of Mary (i.e. Jesus) descends amongst you as a just ruler, he will break the cross, kill the pigs, and abolish the Jizya tax. Money will be in abundance so that nobody will accept it (as charitable gifts).” – Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 2476

This means that people will no longer need weapons (swords), as there will be no need for battle in a society governed by justice. Allah will eliminate harmful elements, even removing poison from animals.

Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “…Then peace and security will prevail on earth, so that lions will graze with camels, tigers with cattle, and wolves with sheep; children will be able to play with snakes without coming to any harm. Jesus will remain for forty years, then die, and the Muslims will pray for him.” – Source: Ahmad

Abu Hurairah said, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “…A child will play with a fox and not come to any harm; a wolf will graze with sheep and a lion with cattle, without harming them.” – Source:  Ahmad

He will govern the world according to Sharia, kill the pigs, break the cross, and the Christians will embrace Islam. People will stop giving sadaqah (charity) because there will be no one in need to accept it. Treasures will surface, but no one will desire them, as wealth will be abundant, and the Hour will be near.

The price of horses will decrease, while the price of bulls/oxen will rise, as the land will need to be cultivated. There will be no wars, and therefore no demand for horses. The entire world will experience peace and an abundance of goodness. Agriculture will flourish without conflict or division for as long as Isa (Aleyhi Salam) lives.

During his time, Isa (Aleyhi Salam) will go to the two holy mosques (Al-Haramein), settle there, and eventually pass away in Madinah. His grave will be beside that of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Abdallah b. `Amr reported God’s messenger as saying, “Jesus, son of Mary will descend to the earth, will marry, have children, and remain forty-five years, after which he will die and be buried along with me in my grave. Then Jesus, son of Mary and I shall arise from one grave between Abu Bakr and ‘Umar.” – Source: Mishkat al-Musabih 5508

The prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever follows my book and manages to apprehend the time of prophet esa and the time of imam mehdi, let him send my salam and ask them for dua and istighfar.” – Source: al-Hakim

Years after the death of Prophet Isa (AS), people will gradually return to the ways of Jahiliyya (the state of ignorance, moral decline, and polytheism that existed before Islam). This period will be marked by a deterioration of faith, and people will slowly revert to sinful practices.

A cool breeze will come from Sham that will take the lives of all the believers, leaving behind only those who are corrupt and devoid of faith. As a result, there will be no one left on earth who has even an atom of Iman (faith). Only the most wicked and immoral people will remain.

Between the death of Prophet Isa (AS) and the rising of the sun from the west, the following events occur:

·       A man from Quraysh named Muq’ad will initially take over leadership.

·        After him, another man from Quraysh will rise to power, but unlike Muq’ad, he will not have a the same reputation.

·       Following this, a man named Al-Maqzoumi will oppose him, possibly someone referred to as “Al-Jahjaa” by the Prophet (peace be upon him). This figure will create division and discord.

·       Then, Al-Qahqani, who is aligned with the path of Al-Mahdi and known by the title “Al-Mansour,” will emerge to confront him. He will rule for 21 years, after which the world will begin to deteriorate. Following his reign, evil will gradually spread, and corruption will increase until the sun rises from the west, signalling the approach of the Hour.

Abdullah bin ‘Amr bin Al-‘As (May Allah be pleased with them) said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “…Then Allah will send a cool breeze from the side of Ash-Sham. None will remain upon the face of the earth having the smallest particle of good or Faith in him but he will die, so much so that even if someone amongst you will enter the innermost part of a mountain, this breeze will reach that place also and will cause him to die. Only the wicked people will survive and they will be as fast as birds (i.e., to commit evil) and as ferocious towards one another as wild beasts. They will never appreciate the good, nor condemn evil. Then Shaitan (Satan) will come to them in the garb of a man and will say: ‘Will you not obey me?’ They will say: ‘What do you order us to do?’ He will command them to worship idols. They will have abundance of sustenance and will lead comfortable lives. Then the Trumpet will be blown…” – Source: Muslim, Riyad as-Salihin 1810

ʿAbdullah ibn ʿAmr narrated that the Prophet said: “…Then Allah will send a cold wind from the direction of Shām (the Levant), and there will not remain on the face of the earth any person who had in his heart a speck of goodness or of Imān, except that death will come to him, such that if one of you was to enter the inner depths of a mountain, the cold wind would reach him and bring him death. There will remain only the most wicked of people who will be as careless as a bird, and they will have the behaviour of beasts. They will not enjoin what is good, and they will not forbid evil. Then Shaytān will appear to them in the form of a human being, and he will say to them, ‘Will you not respond to me?’ So, these evil people will say, ‘What do you command us with?’ So, he will command them to worship idols. They will have abundant provision and comfortable lives, then the Trumpet will be blown [for the Hour] …” – Source: Saheeh Muslim.

After the cool breeze from Sham takes the souls of the believers, leaving behind only the wicked, Shaytan will manifest before them and ask, “Are you not ashamed?” They will reply, “What do you command us?” Shaytan will then instruct them to worship idols, and they will obey. They will continue living in this way until the sound of the trumpet is heard.

Nawwas bin Sam’an al-Kilabi said: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Allah will send ‘Eisa bin Maryam, who will come down at the white minaret in the east of Damascus, wearing two Mahrud [garment dyed with Saffron], resting his hands on the wings of two angels as imam Mahdi and the believers are preparing to pray in beytul maqdis. Prophet Isa A.S will come down in Sham (Syria) with the angels carrying him When he lowers his head, beads of perspiration will fall from it. Every disbeliever who smells the fragrance of his breath will die, and his breath will reach as far as his eye can see. Then he will set out and catch up with him (the Dajjal) at the gate of Ludd, and will kill him. Then the Prophet of Allah Isa will come to some people whom Allah has protected, and he will wipe their faces and tell them of their status in Paradise. While they are like that, Allah will reveal to him: “O ‘Isa, I have brought forth some of My slaves whom no one will be able to kill, so take My slaves to Tur in safety.” Then Gog and Magog will emerge and they will, as Allah describes, “swoop down from every mound.”[21:96] The first of them will pass by lake Tiberias and drink from it, then the last of them will pass by it and will say: “There was water here once.” The Prophet of Allah, ‘Isa and his companions will be besieged there until the head of an ox would be dearer to any one of them than one hundred Dinar are to any one of you today. Then, the Prophet of Allah, ‘Eisa and his companions will supplicate to Allah. Then Allah will send a worm in their necks and the next morning they will all be dead. The Prophet of Allah ‘Isa and his companions will come down and they will not find even the space of a hand span that is free of their stink, stench and blood. They will pray to Allah, and Allah will send birds with necks like the necks of Bactrian camels, which will pick them up and throw them wherever Allah wills. Then Allah will send rain which will not leave any house of clay or hair, and it will wash the earth until it leaves it like a mirror (or a smooth rock). Then it will be said to the earth: “Bring forth your fruits and bring back your blessing.” On that day a group of people will eat from a (single) pomegranate, and it will suffice them, and they will seek shelter beneath its skin. Allah will bless a milch- camel so that it will be sufficient for a large number of people, and a milch-cow will be sufficient for a whole tribe and a milch-ewe will be sufficient for a whole clan. While they are like that, Allah will send a pleasant wind which will seize them beneath their armpits and will take the soul of every Muslim, leaving the rest of the people fornicating like donkeys, and upon them will come the Hour.'” – Source: Sunan Ibn Majah 4075

YAJOOJ WA MAJOOJ – GOG MAGOG

At the end of the mission of prophet Isa (peace be upon him), when peace and tranquillity have spread throughout the Islamic state, and before he travels to Makkah and Madinah, Yajooj and Majooj will appear.

“They said, ‘O Dhul-Qarnayn, indeed, Gog and Magog are causing corruption on the earth. So may we assign for you an exaction that you might make between us and them a barrier?'” – Qur’an: Surah al-Kahf 18:94

He said, ‘What my Lord has established for me is better [than your request]. But assist me with strength, and I will make between you and them a dam.'” – Qur’an: Surah al-Kahf 18:95

“Bring me sheets of iron.’ Then, when he had leveled between the two mountain cliffs, he said, ‘Blow [with bellows].’ Until, when he had made it [like] fire, he said, ‘Bring me that I may pour over it molten copper.'” – Qur’an: Surah al-Kahf 18:96

“So Gog and Magog could not penetrate it, nor could they dig through it.” – Qur’an: Surah al-Kahf 18:97

He said, ‘This is a mercy from my Lord. But when the promise of my Lord comes, He will make it level, and ever is the promise of my Lord true.'” – Qur’an: Surah al-Kahf 18:98

“Until when [the barrier] is opened and Gog and Magog descend from every slope.” – Qur’an: Surah al-Anbiya 21: 96

Gog and Magog are two groups from the children of Adam, and their names are non-Arabic. Scholars of the Arabic language say that the name ‘Gog – Yajuj’ and ‘Magog – Majooj’ are thought to be derived from the Arabic root ajaja (عَجَجَ), which means to burn (burning fire), to boil, high temperature, and salty water that burns due to its saltiness. These names reflect the characteristics of these two destructive nations. Their nature is to burn, corrupt, and destroy everything in their path.

On the authority of Mother of the Believers, Zainab Bint Jahsh (May Allah be pleased with her) said; That the Prophet (Peace be upon him) once came to her in a state of fear and said: (‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah. Woe unto the Arabs from a danger that has come near. An opening has been made in the wall of Gog and Magog like this,” making a circle with his thumb and index finger. Zainab Bint lahsh said: (‘0 Allah’s Messenger! Shall we be destroyed even though there are pious persons among us?” He said: “Yes, when the evil persons will increase.” And in another narration: The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: “Allah has made an opening in the wall of the Gog and Magog (people) like this, and he made with his hand (with the help of his fingers).” – Source: Al-Bukhari and Muslim

After Isa (alayhi salaam) defeats the Dajjal at the gate of Lud, having removed the greatest trial of all time, Allah will reveal to him to take His servants to Mount At-Tur in Sinai, leaving the earth for the two evil tribes, Yajooj and Majooj.

he will make supplication to Allah to eliminate Gog and Magog. In response, Allah will send worms or a plague to attack the necks of Gog and Magog, causing them to die. Their bodies will start to decay, emitting a terrible stench, and the believers will be freed from their evil.

Isa (alayhi salaam) and the believers will then pray for the removal of their remains, and Allah will command that their bodies be removed from the earth by sending birds with long necks to carry away the bodies of Gog and Magog and dispose of them. After their death, Isa (alayhi salaam) will rule justly, and the earth will experience a period of tranquillity before the Day of Judgment.

Narrated Abi Sa’eed al Khudri: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Gog and Magog will come down from every height and they will pass by a river and drink from it, until they leave nothing behind, and the last of them will follow in their footsteps and one of them will say: ‘There was once water in this place.’ They will prevail over the earth, then their leader will say: ‘These are the people of the earth, and we have finished them off. Now let us fight the people of heaven!’ Then one of them will throw his spear towards the sky, and it will come back down smeared with blood. And they will say: ‘We have killed the people of heaven.’ While they are like that, Allah will send a worm like the worm that is found in the noses of sheep, which will penetrate their necks and they will die like locusts, one on top of another. In the morning the Muslims will not hear any sound from them, and they will say: ‘Who will sell his soul for the sake of Allah and see what they are doing?’ A man will go down, having prepared himself to be killed by them, and he will find them dead, so he will call out to them: ‘Be of good cheer, for your enemy is dead!’ Then the people will come out and let their flocks loose, but they will not have anything to graze on except their flesh, and they will become very fat as if they were grazing on the best vegetation they ever found.’” – Source: Imam Ahmad

Narrated Abi Sa’eed al Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said, that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Allah will say, ‘O Adam!’ and he will say, ‘Here I am at Your service, and all goodness is in Your hand.’ He will say, ‘Bring forth those who are to be sent to Hell.’ He will say, ‘Who are those who are to be sent to Hell?’ He will say, ‘From every thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine will be Gog and Magog.’ At that point the young will turn grey, every pregnant female will abort, and the people will appear intoxicated although they are not. But the punishment of Allah is severe.” They said, “O Messenger of Allah, which of us will be that one?” He said, “Be of good cheer, for there will be one man from among you and one thousand from among Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj.” Then he said, “By the One in Whose hand is my soul, I hope that you will be one quarter of the people of Paradise,” and they said, “Allahu Akbar!” Then he said, “I hope that you will be one third of the people of Paradise,” and they said, “Allahu Akbar!” Then he said, “I hope that you will be half of the people of Paradise,” and they said, “Allahu Akbar!” Then he said, “Among the people you are like a black hair on the hide of a white bull, or like a white hair on the hide of a black bull.” – Source: Bukhari & Muslim

The appearance of the smoke (Ad-Dukhan)

The appearance of the smoke (Dukhan) is considered one of the major Signs of the Hour, and one of the significant events that will occur in the lead-up to the final Hour.

It is a thick, dark smoke that will cover the sky and spread over the entire earth. It is believed that this smoke will be so intense that it will obscure the sun and cause immense distress to people. The smoke is a form of punishment, and it will make people experience extreme hardship.

“So watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke.” – Qur’an: Surah ad-Dukhan 44:10

“Covering the people; this is a painful punishment.” – Qur’an: Surah ad-Dukhan 44:11

“Our Lord, remove from us the punishment; indeed, we are believers.” – Qur’an: Surah ad-Dukhan 44:12

The Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, “The Hour will not rise until you have seen ten signs: the rising of the sun from the west, the smoke, the beast…” – Source: Muslim

Interpretations Regarding the Smoke

Scholars have differed in their interpretation of the Smoke.

Ibn Mas‘ud (may Allah be pleased with him) believed it refers to the famine that struck the Quraysh when the Prophet ﷺ invoked Allah against them. As a result, they experienced severe drought and hunger, to the point where they imagined seeing smoke in the sky due to extreme starvation.

Narrated Ibn Mas’ud (May Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet ﷺ said: “Five things are signs of the Hour: The Smoke, the Dajjal, the Beast, the Rising of the Sun from the West, and the Fire.” – Source: Bukhari

Other Opinion:

Some scholars and companions, such as Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), held the view that this Smoke is a future event and is among the terrifying major signs that will appear near the end of times.

Ibn Mas ‘ud (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned that there will be two instances of Smoke:

1.      One that has already passed (the famine during the Prophet’s time).

2.      A future one, which will be a great smoke that will fill the entire heavens and earth, lasting for forty days.

·       The believers will experience it as a mild affliction, like a light fever.

·       The disbelievers, however, will suffer severely as it will cause extreme distress.

Imam Qurtubi mentions that the smoke will cover the earth for a period of forty days, affecting both the believers and disbelievers. The former will be affected as if suffering from a common cold, whereas the latter will suffer harder. [Jami` al-Ahkam al-Qur’an]

The three Khusufs (the earth opens and swallows what’s in it)

Among the major signs of the Hour is the occurrence of three great land collapses (sinkholes), where the earth will open and swallow up people or places as a form of divine punishment. This event will occur in three specific locations: in the East, in the West, and in the Arabian Peninsula.

This is indicated in the following hadith.

Hudhaifah b. Asid al-Ansari said: We were sitting in the shade of the chamber of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) discussing (something) and when we mentioned the last hour, our voices rose high. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “The last hour will not come or happen until there appear ten signs before it : the rising of the sun in its place of setting, the coming forth of the beast, the coming forth of Gog and Magog, the Dajjal (Antichrist), (the descent of) Jesus son of Mary, the smoke, and three collapses of the earth: one in the west, one in the east, and one in the Arabian Peninsula. The last of that will be the emergence of a fire from Yemen, from the lowest part of Aden, and drive mankind to their place of assembly.” – Source: Sunan Abi Dawud 4311

Scholars’ Interpretations of the Three Land Collapses:

Many scholars believe that these land collapses have not occurred yet and that their occurrence will be catastrophic and extraordinary—a sign of the nearing end of the world. However, some scholars interpret these sinkholes as possible references to frequent earthquakes and landslides.

Additionally, some scholars connect these land collapses to the era of prophet ‘Isa (Jesus, peace be upon him) and the final period of pre-Qiyamah (judgement day) turmoil, similar to what is mentioned about the Smoke. And Allah knows best.

Some narrations place the three great land collapses among the ten unavoidable major signs of the Hour.

Hudhaifa b. Usaid al-Ghifari reported: Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) came to us all of a sudden as we were (busy in a discussion). He said: “What do you discuss about?” They (the Companions) said. “We are discussing about the Last Hour.” Thereupon he said: “It will not come until you see ten signs before and (in this connection) he made a mention of the smoke, Dajjal, the beast, the rising of the sun from the west, the descent of Jesus son of Mary (Allah be pleased with him), the Gog and Magog, and land-slides in three places, one in the east, one in the west and one in Arabia at the end of which fire would burn forth from the Yemen, and would drive people to the place of their assembly.” – Source: Sahih Muslim (Hadith 2901).

Next, a great gathering fire will emerge from Yemen (Aden), guiding everyone to the Mahshar (the place of gathering). These events will be witnessed by the disbelievers. Afterward, an individual known as Dhul-Suwayqatayn (meaning ‘the man with two thin legs’) from Abyssinia (modern-day Ethiopia) will appear and dismantle the Ka’bah, brick by brick.

This is mentioned among the sayings of the Prophet ﷺ,

Narrated by Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him): “A man from Abyssinia, with thin shins, will demolish the Ka‘bah, dismantling it stone by stone.” – Source: Muslim

Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Take benefit from this House (the Ka‘bah), for indeed, it will be destroyed, and it will be lifted in the third generation.” – Source: Bukhari & Muslim

Ad-Dabbah (The Beast)

Al-Dabbah is a significant creature that will appear during the end times, specifically when corruption has spread among humanity. It will have the ability to speak and reason. It will mark the faces of people, distinguishing the believers from the disbelievers. The Beast of the Earth is described as carrying the Seal of Solomon and the Staff of Moses. Regarding its emergence, some say it will appear from a crack in the Ka’bah, while others suggest it will come from the hills of Safa among others. It is described as a combination of different beasts and animals.

And when the word befalls them, We will bring forth for them a creature from the earth to speak to them because mankind did not believe in Our signs.” – Qur’an: Surah an-Naml 27: 82

Scholars differ whether the emergence of Al-Dabbah will occur before the sun rises from the west or after. However, once one of these signs begins, the other will follow immediately after—they will happen in quick succession, which is indicated in the following Hadith.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr, who said: “I memorised a hadith from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ which I have not forgotten. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘The first of the signs to appear will be the rising of the sun from the west and the emergence of the Beast upon the people in the morning. Whichever of these occurs first, the other will follow shortly thereafter.’” – Source: Muslim

As for Al-Dabbah and its impact on the people, it will mark the disbelievers with a “kafir” (unbeliever) on their noses and cause the believers to glow. This distinction will be so clear that people will call out to one another, saying, “O believer,” and responding, “Yes, O kafir.”

Narrated by Abu Huraira (RA): The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “The Beast will come out at the time of the Dajjal, and it will have the staff of Musa (Moses) and the ring of Sulayman (Solomon). It will strike the faces of the people and leave a mark on their foreheads, and it will speak to them, saying: ‘This is the disbeliever.'” – Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2940, Tirmidhi, Hadith: 3187, Musnad Ahmad, vol. 2 pg. 295 and Mustadrak Hakim, vol. 4 pg. 486

The Connection to the Loss of Knowledge and the Removal of the Qur’an:

It has been narrated that the Qur’an will be lifted from the hearts of people.

Ibn Mas‘ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “The occurrence of this event will be when knowledge is lost due to the death of scholars.” – Source: Shu’ab al-Imān 1590, al-Hakim

Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud reported: “Increase your recitation of the Qur’an before it is taken away.” They asked, “How will the Qur’an be taken away?” He replied, “It will be erased from the hearts of men, and they will wake up to find it gone. They will forget ‘La ilaha illa Allah’ (There is no god but Allah) and will return to the sayings and poetry of the pre-Islamic period (Jahiliyyah). This will happen when the divine decree is fulfilled upon them.” – Source: Narrated by al-Daarimi with a saheeh isnaad, no. 3209. This is also mentioned in “Ashraat al-Saa‘ah” by Al-Barzanji.

Khadījah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Islam will spread during the night until there is no sign of it left on Earth.” – Source:  Al-Mustadrak ‘ala Al-Sahihayn

The Impact of the Dabbah (Beast) on Believers, Disbelievers and Iblis:

The believer will give birth, but will not die until completing forty years after the emergence of the Beast of the Earth. Then, death will return among them, and they will remain in that state as long as Allah wills. Then, death will hasten among the believers until no believer remains.

The disbelievers will then say, ‘We used to be terrified of the believers, but now not one of them remains, and repentance is no longer accepted from us.’ They will then engage in immoral acts in the streets like animals. A man will commit incest with his mother, sister, or daughter in the middle of the road. One will finish, and another will take his place, and no one will object or attempt to stop it. The best of them on that day will be the one who merely says, ‘If only you would step aside from the road, that would be better.’

They will remain in this state until no legitimate children are born, and all the inhabitants of the Earth will be illegitimate children. They will remain so as long as Allah wills. Then, Allah will render the wombs of women barren for thirty years—no woman will give birth, and there will be no children on Earth. All of them will be the offspring of adultery and the worst of people. Upon them, the Hour (the Day of Judgment) will be established.

As for Iblis:

·       His punishment is delayed – he wanted it delayed until they [humans] rise again, but Allah said to him until the appointed time.

·       When the sun rises from the west Iblis throws himself in sajda to Allah. And he says ‘My Lord, order me to make sajda to anyone you want.’

·       Zabaniyya (Angels of jahanam) will ask: ‘Oh Sir, what is this pleading?’ Iblis will reply: ‘I asked Allah to leave me until this certain time, and now it is the certain time.’

He (Iblis) said, “My Lord, then reprieve me until the Day they are resurrected.” – Qur’an: Surah al-Hijr 15: 36

Allah said, “Indeed, you are of those reprieved.” – Qur’an: Surah al-Hijr 15: 37

“Until the Day of the appointed time.” – Qur’an: Surah al-Hijr 15: 38

The sun rising from the west

Among the major signs of the Hour, which no one has denied its occurrence, is the rising of the sun from the west. The Day of Judgment will not come until the sun rises from the west. At that point, everyone will believe in it, but those who did not believe before will not benefit from belief.

Narrated Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet ﷺ said: “The Hour will not be established until the sun rises from the west. When it rises and people see it, they will all believe. But that is the time when faith will not benefit those who did not believe before or did not earn good through their faith.” – Source: Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith 4635

The rising of the sun from the west and the emergence of the beast will occur in quick succession. Whichever one happens first, the other will immediately follow.

The doors of Tawbah (repentance) will be closed, and the fate of each person will be sealed. At that time, anyone who had not believed before will find that their belief will not benefit them, and repentance will no longer be accepted.

“Do they [the disbelievers] await anything but that the angels should come to them or your Lord should come, or that some of the signs of your Lord should come? The Day that some of the signs of your Lord come, no soul will benefit from its faith if it did not believe before or earn through its faith some good.” – Qur’an: Surah Al-An’am 6:158

The verse mentioned above does not refer to the repentance of an individual sinner, but rather, it refers to a universal event after which repentance will no longer be accepted. This is because the rising of the sun from the west is an overwhelming and extraordinary sign, which will make people witness the truth firsthand.

At that moment, the veil over their perception will be lifted, and they will realise the reality of faith and divine truth. However, since faith must be based on conviction and not forced recognition, their belated belief will not be accepted.

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “The Hour will not be established until the sun rises from the West: and when the people see it, then whoever will be living on the surface of the earth will have faith, and that is (the time) when no good will it do to a soul to believe then, if it believed not before.” – Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 4635

Abu Shaybah reported from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: “When the first of the signs appears, the records of deeds will be closed, the pens will be lifted, and actions will no longer be counted.” – Source: Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah (Hadith 37559). Tadhkirat Al-Qurtubi (Hadith 1471).

The Quran will be removed from the earth where no verse remains in written form or in the hearts of individuals.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “When three signs appear, no soul will benefit from its faith if it did not already believe or earn good by its faith: the rising of the sun from the west, the False Messiah (Dajjal), and the beast from the earth”. – Source: Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 158

The day that some of the Signs of your Lord do come, no good will it do to a person to believe then, if he believed not before, nor earned good (by performing deeds of righteousness) through his Faith. – Qur’an: Surah Al-An`am 6:158

Abu Dharr said, The Prophet asked me: ‘Do you know where the sun goes when it sets?’ I said, ‘I do not know’ He said, ‘It travels until it prostrates itself beneath the Throne, and asks for permission to rise again. But a time will come when it will be told, ‘Go back whence you came.’ That will be the time when ‘No good will it do to a soul to believe in them then, if it believed not before nor earned righteousness through its faith.’ – Source: Bukhari

The Gathering fire

The gathering fire is one of the major signs of the Hour. In fact, it is considered the final sign before the Hour is established, marking the beginning of the Last Day.

This fire will emerge from Yemen, specifically from Aden, and will serve as a means of driving people to the Mahshar (the place of gathering on the Day of Judgment), which is in Sham (Syria).

Narrated by Abu Huraira (RA): The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “The Hour will not come until a fire will come out of the land of Hijaz (Yemen), and it will illuminate the necks of the camels in Busra.” – Source: Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 7118

Salim bin ‘Abdullas [bin ‘Umar] narrated from his father, that the Messenger of Allah(peace be upon him) said: “A fire is coming from Hadramawt- before the Day of Judgement- to gather the people.” They said: “O Messenger of Allah! What do you order us?” He said: “Stick to Ash-Sham.” – Source: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2217

Abu Huraira (RA) reported: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Before the Hour (of Judgment) comes, there will be a fire that will gather the people from the east to the west. When it begins to appear, it will gather them to the place of gathering for the final reckoning.” – Source: Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2904

The Fire That Gathers People from the East to the West:

Narrated Anas: `Abdullah bin Salam heard the news of the arrival of Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) (at Medina) while he was on a farm collecting its fruits. So he came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, “I will ask you about three things which nobody knows unless he be a prophet. Firstly, what is the first portent of the Hour? The Prophet ﷺ said: “The first sign of the Hour will be a fire that gathers people from the east to the west.” – Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 4480

This means that the affairs of the world will come to an end, and nothing will preoccupy people except what leads to the Hereafter.

What is the Gathering Fire?

Scholars have discussed whether this fire will be literal, consuming and forcing people towards the gathering place, or if it symbolises mass migrations due to catastrophic events.

It has been described as:

·       A massive fire that will push people westward, moving them towards their final destination.

·       A phenomenon that may last for a long period before finally leading people to the Mahshar (place of final gathering).

·       A material fire or another divine event that drives people forward.

The Chaotic Flight in Fear of the Fire:

The Prophet ﷺ gave a vivid description of how people will flee in masses when this fire appears in hadiths Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

There are three categories of people:

1.      Some will be willing riders, fleeing with provisions.

2.      Some will run on foot, exhausted and struggling.

3.      Others will move in groups, taking turns riding their animals or walking.

They will cross rivers and difficult terrain, rushing towards the gathering place.

The Final Migration to the Levant (Sham):

The Prophet ﷺ foretold that before the Hour, there will be a migration similar to that of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him).

Narrated from Abdullah ibn ‘Amr (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘There will be a migration after a migration. The best of people will be in the land of Ibrahim’s migration (Sham). No one will remain on Earth except the worst of its people, whom the land will cast out. Then, the fire will gather them all together.’” – Source: Imam Ahmad and Abu Dawud

Some scholars believe that Sham will be the land of the final gathering based on the Qur’anic verse:

“On the Day when the earth will be replaced with another earth and so will the heavens, and they will appear before Allah, the One, the Supreme.” – Qur’an: Surah Ibrahim, 14:48

But does this mean that Sham will be the final gathering place? The answer is no, because the verse does not refer to the Signs of the Hour. Instead, it speaks about the transformation of the heavens and the earth at the final resurrection.

The gathering mentioned in the hadiths refers to people being assembled in one place on Earth before the resurrection. As for the gathering on the Day of Judgment, that occurs after the resurrection of the dead. And Allah knows best.

The Trumpet

The Trumpet is one of the most significant and momentous events related to the Day of Judgment. It marks the end of the world and the beginning of the resurrection and the final reckoning of all humanity.

The Trumpet will be blown by Israfil (Angel Raphael), who is one of the four archangels in Islam. Israfil has been assigned the task of blowing the Trumpet to signal the end of the world and the resurrection of all creatures for judgment.

The sound of the Trumpet will be so overwhelming that it will cause the death of everything in creation

  1. The First Blast: The first blast of the Trumpet will result in the destruction of all life on earth. All living beings will die, and the heavens and the earth will be shaken, as described in several verses of the Quran. This event will signal the complete end of the world as we know it.

“And the Day the Trumpet is blown, and whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will be terrified, except whom Allah wills. And all will come to Him humbled.” – Qur’an: Surah an-Naml 27:87

  1. The Second Blast: After a period of time, Allah will command the Angel Israfil to blow the Trumpet a second time. This second blast will bring about the resurrection of all creatures. The dead will be revived, and all people will be gathered together in the Mahshar (the place of assembly) for their final judgment.

“And the Trumpet will be blown, and all who are in the heavens and on the earth will fall dead, except whom Allah wills. Then it will be blown again, and at once they will rise up, looking on.” – Qur’an: Surah Az-Zumar 39:68

Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “How can I feel at ease when the Angel of the Trumpet, (Israfil) has put his lips to the Trumpet and is waiting for the order to blow it”. He (ﷺ) perceived as if this had shocked his Companions, so he (ﷺ) told them to seek comfort through reciting: ‘Hasbunallah wa ni’mal-Wakil [Allah (Alone) is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs (for us)]“. – Source: Riyad as-Salihin 409
